The Failure of Occupy Wall Street

Source

2012-05-31-Occupy2.jpg

For those who are objective and unemotional it was easy to see this coming. The Occupy "movement" (and I use that term generously) has spiraled into irrelevance and relative obscurity. And it's a shame, as much of its message had broad resonance which could've been harnessed into significant power and influence in Washington. Instead, it became a whole lotta nuthin' over nuthin.'

So what went wrong?:

1. The "Occupy" Factor: Successful protest movements aren't about occupation, per se. This movement was too tied to its home base, a small symbolic tent-city near Wall Street, and in other similar parks in Boston, San Francisco and other cities. In order to rally scalable national support people needed to see marchers taking to the streets rather than largely hanging out in a park, which served, rightly or wrongly, to portray the Zuccotti Park inhabitants as drifters, vagrants and freeloaders rather than committed protesters. Much of the attention was not over its message but over the communal aspect of park life. Successful protest movements aren't about camping out, book sharing, eating, and "talking to each other," as one organizer told me. As a friend of mine joked, Zuccotti looked more like Bonnaroo. It confined and defined the message in a way that was limited and negative.

2. No Leadership: Every successful protest movement needs a leader; a strong, passionate, articulate, visible face and voice of the movement. (See Ghandi, Martin Luther King Jr., Lech Wałęsa, etc)

3. The Wrong Message: While I understood and agreed with much of what this movement was about, I think it took a deadly turn when it essentially turned into a "rich bad/poor good" theme. That wholesale indictment of everyone in the "1%" (including passionate, dedicated, extremely generous liberals like George Soros, Warren Buffett, Bill Gates and the Kennedys) was the wrong message. The mission shouldn't have been class warfare, but equality and fairness for all through reasonable government regulation and taxation.

4. No Agenda: While the organizers prided themselves on the fact that they had no real agenda other than to vent the nation's collective anger over the economic divide and injustices on Wall Street, this lack of clear, stated demands was a huge mistake. It should've taken a lesson from the Tea Party movement, which was and remains powerful, articulate and clear in its demands and which sent 63 congressmen to Washington in an election year to advocate and legislate its small government, less taxes agenda.

And that last point is the real shame of it all. In an election year as significant as this one, the Occupy movement is as good as dead. It will have achieved nothing legislatively, it will have elected no one and, in the end, it has had no material impact on American life. Nothing, that is, if you measure it against all other successful protest movements.

Occupy Wall Street: Does anyone care about the anti-Semitism?

In the millions of pixels devoted to the radical Occupy Wall Streeters, virtually nothing has been said about its anti-Semitic elements. The conservative Emergency Committee for Israel is out with an eye-popping ad:

Those vile scenes have been noticed in Israel as well. Israel Today observes:

A growing number of Israelis and foreign Jewish groups are expressing concern over the anti-Semitic flavor of some of the “Occupy Wall St.” economic protests in the US. . . .
In Los Angeles, California, protester Patricia McAllister, who identified herself as an employee of the Los Angeles Unified School District (we can only hope she is not an educator), had this to say:
“I think that the Zionist Jews, who are running these big banks and our Federal Reserve, which is not run by the federal government… they need to be run out of this country.”
On the American Nazi Party website, leader Rocky Suhayda voiced support for “Occupy Wall St.” and asked, “Who hold the wealth and power in this country? The Judeo-Capitalists. Who is therefore the #1 enemy who makes this filth happen? The Judeo-Capitalists.”
One of [the] people reportedly responsible for organizing the “Occupy Wall St.” protests, Adbusters editor Kalle Lasn, has a history of perpetuating conspiracy theories that say the Jews control America’s foreign policies.
Back in New York, another protester insisted that “a small ethnic group constitutes almost all of the hedge fund managers and bankers on Wall St. They are all Jewish. There is a conspiracy in this country where Jews control the media, finances… They have pooled their money together in order to take control of America.”

This does not mean all or even most of the OWS protesters are anti-Semitic, but the prominent liberal leaders who have shown sympathy for their cause have failed to speak out, as have the other elements within the group. Israel Today reports: “More than the few Occupy Wall St. anti-Semites themselves, it is the lack of a clear and firm repudiation of their hateful rhetoric by the mainstream American media and political leaders that has a growing number of Israelis and Jews on edge.”

You will recall that reports of alleged anti-black comments (never verified) from Tea Party groups brought howls from Democrats and the media. But not this time, when Jews are the object of the vilification (documented on film) and it’s the left who is protesting and engaging in behavior that would have earned the Tea Partyers condemnation had they engaged in the same conduct.

The lefty mob is still trying to decide whether to make “demands,” so perhaps they are otherwise occupied. But for respectable politicians and media outlets, where is the outrage?

UPDATE (5:30 p.m.): The Anti-Defamation League has called on “organizers, participants and supporters of these rallies to condemn such bigoted statements clearly and forcefully.”

OWS supporters are doing a poor job of convincing me that they’re not anti-Semites

In a Wednesday appearance on the Russia Today television network, I discussed the violent confrontations between police officers and Occupy Wall Street protesters earlier this week in Oakland, California. I made it clear that I don’t condone police brutality. In fact, I am vehemently opposed to an oppressive police state.

I also explained that though I disagree with the protesters’ radical agenda, I agree that cronyism is a real problem. Government should not be in the business of picking winners and losers on Wall Street, Main Street or any other street.

The segment lasted for the better part of 20 minutes. I had a spirited but friendly back-and-forth with my fellow panelist, OWS supporter Charlie McGrath. We agreed that there is no such thing as “too big to fail.” We agreed that violent rhetoric won’t help Occupy Wall Street get its message across (I still question what OWS’s message is, but certainly large-scale skirmishes with Occupiers hurling paint at police punctuated by tear gas being used on the protesters won’t make the message any clearer.)

McGrath and I also agreed that it was strange that the show’s host kept showing clips of Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello at OWS rallies and asking us to comment on what he was saying.

Despite all these areas of agreement, the OWS-supporting viewers weren’t satisfied. In fact, many were furious. While a few supported my being on the show, the majority focused on my contention that many Occupiers are anti-Semites. Note: I have not edited the below comments from the Russia Today YouTube channel.

One commenter, “largegrainofsalt,” asserted that the fact that the protesters have observed Jewish holidays proves that they aren’t anti-Semitic:

tony wasn’t just an ass, he was demonstrably wrong. the protests are not in any way anti-semetic. several of the larger protest held events for a jewish holiday recently.

His comment was surrounded by others that undermine his thesis:

Tony Katz? What kind of surname is Katz? Another Jew-Zionist pig!!!!! This should speak volumes of what his message and hidden intent is: to protect the criminal dirt-bag jew element who have been ruining the world for decades. — waddietwo

Tony Katz = hybrid cross between Rick Moranis and nerdy Gene Simmons. Like all Yids, he reminds me of someone who would steal you wallet and then help you look for it. He’d probably kill your mother for 30 shekels. — slvrizgold

Tony Katz the mouthy rodent-faced Jew at it again. — papalolita

Katz is a paid talking head to downplay the OWS and a member of the same tribe that caused this mess in the first place. Not only the jewsury the bankers have caused but the moral degradation these satanists are promoting — adampie12

Tony Katz is a Jew. Thus his siding with the police. Any questions? — kniteofzero

Also undermining largegrainofsalt’s thesis are this sign, this sign, this sign and this video, among others.

Not all the comments are anti-Semitic. Some people just hate; some specifically hate me; still others want me dead:

ill throw pain on you asswhole we have a right to do what were doin its called the first amendment … — brad97777

Tea party co-opted by big corporations — gottmedblandad

TONY KARTZ IS A FAT LARD THAT IS AGAINST OUR FOUNDING FATHER HE IS SATAN – britney1456789

Fat bearded man needs to be taken out and shot. — Kennedy369

Fuck you Tony, you sell out liar c*nt. — wasy35

tony katz is a fat piece of shit — SUPERSTUD6000

Maybe Hillary Clinton will designate an “Open Hunting on Tony” day — like she did on the Libyan president. Let’s be ready. I’m getting the shooting iron oiled up now… — NibiruLives

If this is how OWS’s supporters behave online, I can’t help but wonder how these protests will end. What happened earlier this week in Oakland might be a clue.

Tony Katz is the host of the daily radio show “The Tony Katz Radio Spectacular” on the All Patriots Media Network. He’s also a Los Angeles tea party organizer and speaker. Find him on Twitter @tonykatz

OWS Walking Past Soros’ House To Protest Outside Murdoch’s Apartment

On Wednesday’s The Factor, Bill O’Reilly brought on author and columnist Ann Coulter to discuss Barack Obama being in “full campaign mode.”

As you know, Obama visited Jay Leno where he talked about, among other things, the end of the Iraq War and Occupy Wall Street.

Coulter shared that she finds Obama’s mannerisms “increasingly grating.” O’Reilly noted that a recent poll organized by Fox News found that 48 percent of respondents would be “distraught” if Obama were re-elected (Less people, O’Reilly joked, than would totally freak out were Coulter elected Commander-in-Chief. I don’t think she terribly appreciated that attempt at humor ). Coulter was dismayed that more people weren’t preparing to high-tail it to Canada given Obamacare’s impact on the economy.

On the matter of Occupy Wall Street, Coulter found Obama’s comments on Leno’s show “annoying” given that he is “buddies” with the very überwealthy, corrupt Wall Streeters the movement professes to be against. Plus, she added, it’s not as if the protest is especially committed to upholding its professed ideas across the board instead of creating a demonstration that has a much more partisan agenda:

In point of fact, these people are not against Wall Street. They’re walking right past George Soros’ house and protesting outside Rupert Murdoch’s apartment. Well, you know, the name of their group isn’t “Occupy Producers Of Products We Don’t Approve Of.”

Have a look, via Fox News.

Rich Got Richer Under Obama and Clinton & Wealth Gap Between Young & Old Is Widest Ever

Original

Posted by Jim Hoft on Monday, November 7, 2011, 4:21 AM

Don’t tell the Occupy Wall Street Marxist loons… They won’t know who to push down the cement stairs.

Here are a few facts for the stinky Obama-endorsed #OWS squatters:
The Rich Got Richer under Bill Clinton and Barack Obama (especially their rich buddies!)

And, the inequality keeps expanding.
Investors Business Daily reported, via Instapundit:

it turns out that the rich actually got poorer under President Bush, and the income gap has been climbing under Obama.

What’s more, the biggest increase in income inequality over the past three decades took place when Democrat Bill Clinton was in the White House.

The wealthiest 5% of U.S. households saw incomes fall 7% after inflation in Bush’s eight years in office, according to an IBD analysis of Census Bureau data. A widely used household income inequality measure, the Gini index, was essentially flat over that span. Another inequality gauge, the Theil index, showed a decline.

In contrast, the Gini index rose — slightly — in Obama’s first two years. Another Census measure of inequality shows it’s climbed 5.7% since he took office.

Meanwhile, during Clinton’s eight years, the wealthiest 5% of American households saw their incomes jump 45% vs. 26% under Reagan. The Gini index shot up 6.7% under Clinton, more than any other president since 1980.

Also, the Wealth Gap Between Young and Old Is Widest Ever under Barack Obama.
The AP reported:

The wealth gap between younger and older Americans has stretched to the widest on record, worsened by a prolonged economic downturn that has wiped out job opportunities for young adults and saddled them with housing and college debt.

The typical U.S. household headed by a person age 65 or older has a net worth 47 times greater than a household headed by someone under 35, according to an analysis of census data released Monday.

While people typically accumulate assets as they age, this wealth gap is now more than double what it was in 2005 and nearly five times the 10-to-1 disparity a quarter-century ago, after adjusting for inflation.

The analysis reflects the impact of the economic downturn, which has hit young adults particularly hard. More are pursuing college or advanced degrees, taking on debt as they wait for the job market to recover. Others are struggling to pay mortgage costs on homes now worth less than when they were bought in the housing boom.

If Obama’s #OWS minions were the least bit informed they’d be protesting at the White House, not at an Americans for Prosperity Dinner.

23-Year Old Ashlie Gough Identified as Woman Found Dead at Occupy Vancouver

SEE CORRECTION AT THE BOTTOM.

From the British Columbia news service:

VANCOUVER – The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of the person who died at the Occupy Vancouver encampment on Nov. 5, 2011.

The deceased is Ashlie Gough, aged 23, of Victoria. She was found unresponsive in a tent at the site about 4:40 p.m. Despite aggressive resuscitative efforts, she could not be revived.

All indications are that her death was the result of a drug overdose, but this has yet to be confirmed by the coroner.

Earlier I condemned the culture of lawlessness fostered within the “Occupy” encampments, and I am still furious to think that the drugs which killed her may have been supplied by another resident of the camp. Perhaps someone more affluent than her, because it’s pretty clear from her Facebook account that she had been living in poverty.

But it also seems doubtful that she was a completely innocent victim. No, apparently her life had been in a downward spiral for some time. It’s unclear exactly when and why things started going wrong for Ashlie Gough. Perhaps she just made some very bad choices.

And then to her death at Occupy Vancouver at the age of 23…well, it’s enough to break my heart. Rest in peace.

Correction (11/7): When I originally wrote this post I expressed an opinion that Ashlie Gough appeared to have been in something of a “downward spiral” in the years preceding her untimely passing.

I formed this opinion based on a review of a series of photos in her Facebook account from the 2008-2009 timeframe, which had been linked elsewhere in the media, and which I found very dispiriting. In expressing this opinion my intent was not to disparage her, or cause any additional pain for her friends or family, but rather to express what I saw as the tragedy of a life cut way too short.

I’ve subsequently heard from several of her close friends who have convinced me that my characterization of her as being in a “downward spiral” was inaccurate, as things had turned around for her in recent years. I’ve seen other credible information now which attests to this fact.

It’s easy to forget how even a niche, political blog in California can reach the world via the power of Google, and in retrospect I should have been more careful with the words I chose. For those that knew Ashlie, I am sincerely sorry for your loss.

#JustLikeTheTeaParty: STDs at OWS

How many STDs tests you remmeber being offered in a Tea Party event? Yeah, me neither.
It’s the Autumn of Love! Occupy Wall Street protesters are flocking to nearby health clinics for STD and HIV testing after getting their freak on in ’60s-style hookups with crusty strangers, sources told The Post yesterday.

“Last week was free love,” said a medical professional at a clinic located a short walk from Zuccotti Park, referring to the number of people who organizers have referred for sexually transmitted disease testing.

A volunteer at the park admitted concern among protesters about STDs. “We give directions to clinics if people ask for information regarding STDs,” said the volunteer, who identified himself only as “Captain” and added that pregnancy tests are also a hot item. “Like anything else, it happens. People ask, and we do the best we can for them.”

Volunteers at the medical tent hand out cash, usually $15 or $20, so the randy radicals can visit clinics that cater to a low-income clientele, the source said. Experts said it’s the right thing to do.

“My advice for the protesters would be to practice safer sex. It’s a lot cheaper to buy a condom than get treated for an STD,” said Dr. Lisa Oldson, medical director of Chicago-based Analyte Health, which provides testing services for labs nationwide, including STD Test Express New York.
