Imagine a country free from abortion, a place where the overwhelming majority opposes the killing of the unborn and the elderly, and the right to life is enshrined in unquestionable laws. It's not difficult to imagine it - the United States and Canada fit that description only a few decades ago.
Although both countries were socially less than perfect, the consensus in favor of the right to life was clear and incontestable. Both countries were pro-life nations in that sense, although no one thought of using such a term. It would have been like saying one was pro-happiness, or pro-decency, or pro-goodness - a useless redundancy.
Now imagine once again living the nightmare of watching the most important region of one of these pro-life nations fall into the hands of the abortion industry, as the culture of death establishes a foothold in the midst of social upheaval. The rest of the country is holding on, but only barely, as the Supreme Court stands on the verge of imposing abortion on the entire country.
For Americans and Canadians, the above scenario evokes bitter memories of a not-so-distant past, a lost world that slipped away, a society we only dream of having again. But for those of us who live in Mexico, that scenario is a daily reality. It is happening right now.
Mexico, with its 114 million citizens, has been a pro-life country since its founding, inheriting the Christian tradition of its Spanish forbears. Although the Spanish colonies suffered from certain injustices, the Christian ethos they imported brought an end to the human sacrifices that had marred the indigenous cultures of the region.
A religion of fear and cruelty, which had oppressed the peoples of pre-Hispanic America, was replaced by a religion of love and forgiveness. It seemed that human sacrifice has been abolished forever, replaced by the infinitely meritorious sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
And so it remained, until a new conquest began in the 1960's. Spearheaded by the Rockefeller Foundation, American and European agencies fought to reestablish the same culture of death vanquished so many centuries ago, under the rubric of "population control."
After decades of funneling money to proxy organizations that agitate for the propagation of contraception and the legalization of abortion, the international death lobby achieved its prize, the crown jewel of Mexico, its capital city. In 2007, only a year after I arrived, Mexico City legalized the killing of the unborn, free of charge, at government expense.
Now Mexicans are fighting a desperate battle to contain the slaughter that has begun in Mexico's federal district, where over 60,000 lives have now been lost. Seventeen states have passed pro-life amendments to their constitutions - but that might not be enough.
In just four years, the country's Supreme Court has gone from a firm majority in favor of the right of the states to prohibit abortion, to a razor-thin minority just large enough to prevent a new Roe v Wade. As long as three judges hold out, the country is safe -- but the terms of those judges is soon to end.
Throughout Latin America, the same process is occurring at a slower rate, as pro-abortion groups funded by wealthy international foundations spew propaganda in every direction, glorifying the murder of the unborn as a "human right," and vilifying those who defend the right to life. Their allies in the legislatures, courts, executive agencies and even medical associations, are constantly agitating for the advent of the abortion industry.
That's why I'm here as LifeSiteNews' Latin America correspondent, living at ground zero in the fight for the rights of the unborn throughout the region, bringing you coverage of this terrible struggle that will determine the fate of its currently 550 million people.
Mexico City is sometimes a difficult place to be, but it is worthwhile to live in solidarity with those whose lives and families are under attack by wealthy international institutions and their local collaborators in government and civil society.
Mexico City's government has become a showcase for every conceivable anti-life and anti-family policy, from "express divorce" and "homosexual marriage" to abortion-on-demand. Even "temporary marriages" are now being proposed.
This once-great city, crumbling under the weight of its own sins, is a microcosm of Latin America's future, and the future of the whole world, if the international abortionists have their way.
LifeSiteNews is not only bringing you coverage of the international struggle for life and family, but is also bringing its coverage to Latin America through our Spanish and Portuguese websites.
Entirely dependent upon your support, LifeSiteNews is making a profound difference in a vast area of the globe, bringing the facts to vulnerable people who are under siege by forces that want to kill their children and destroy their families.
However, I must express my great concern that the LifeSiteNews initiatives in this hugely populated part of the world are in imminent danger of having to shut down. That is because LifeSiteNews has been unable to reach its fundraising goals during the past few campaigns and is still not even half way to achieving its much needed goal for this current Christmas campaign.
In doing this work to help our our brothers and sisters in Latin America, we follow in the footsteps of Christ, who was born in poverty and prioritized the poor, bringing them truths that has been denied to them by a corrupt elite.

Please join us in this crucial work. Help us to bring the light of truth to millions who are drowning in an ocean of media-propagated lies.
Will you help save a whole world, a beautiful world to which most North Americans are sadly oblivious, from the exploitation of the wealthy and powerful? (Click Here to Donate)
This Christmas, when we pay homage to the impoverished Christ Child, let us not forget those he imitated and loved.
Please be generous in your support of LifeSiteNews' international mission which is directly related to the same mission in your own nations. It is all part of the same war against life and family by the very same international de-population forces.
Thank you, and have a blessed Christmas.
